London's first International Alternative Press Festival is here, promising a fortnight of truly 'alternative' exhibitions and workshops, bringing together self-publishing artists from the UK and beyond.
The festival kicks off on Friday 27 May with a launch party at The Miller pub, London Bridge. Musicians and actors from independent arts radio station Resonance 104.4FM will be performing, while artists produce live illustrations of the show.
The Alternative Press Fair, Saturday 28 - Sunday 29, is at Conway Hall, Holborn. This is a chance to check out and buy self-published, alternative and radical comics, prints, poetry and literature from a wide range of exhibitors. There are also talks and workshops throughout the weekend, including 'Create a Zine in a Day', 'How to Make a Turban Headband' and 'Cut and Paste Fun' with comedienne Josie Long, plus a reading and zine swap area, and a communal table open to anyone who wants to display and sell their own work.
Throughout the festival, from 28 May to 12 June, Orbital Comics is hosting a free exhibition and a series of talks exploring Slovenian alternative comic Stripburger. From 30 May to 5 June, The New Gallery is showcasing the work of artists from the Malmo Comic Art School in Sweden. And if you're feeling really alternative, head to The Sassoon Gallery for the 'Walworth Jumpers' workshops, which include life drawing, mural painting and a masterclass in starting your own cult. Something for everyone then.
