Famous portraits of famous physicians
Royal College of Physicians Portrait Event April 24 2018
The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) is presenting a special event exploring current portraiture. This event will give you access to the remarkable RCP art collection. The RCP continues to be one of the few places that continue to commission portraits of its leaders.
On Tuesday the 24th of April from 6 pm to 9 pm at the RCP office in Regent's Park Artists, curators and writers will explore how contemporary portraiture is different to portraits of the past. The use of photography vs artists being used to depict the person's personality will be discussed. The evolution of portraiture will be demonstrated both visually and in the lecture. It will delve into the world of the RCP's nationally significant collection and compare symbolism now to that from the past.
The speakers are Paul Benney and Jessica van der Weert. Jessica van der Weert will showcase her current photographs depicting portraits of African physicians. These portrait photos contribute to the RCP fundraising.
At this event, the portrait exhibition will be open to 8 pm. There will be over 140 portraits on display ranging from artists like Anthony van Dyck, Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Lawrence, Elisabeth Frink and Pietro Annigoni. You will also be able to view the current exhibition 'Ceaseless motion: William Harvey's experiments in circulation'. This exhibit shows images from the venerable medical and scientific pioneer.
