In Conversation with George R.R. Martin and Robin Hobb at Freemasons' Hall

Old and new fantasy fans alike will be excited to hear that George R.R. Martin is visiting London this August and will be taking part in an exclusive once-in-a-lifetime event with international bestselling fantasy author Robin Hobb.

The phenomenal success of the HBO TV show, Game of Thrones, has put fantasy authors on the mainstream map like nothing we've ever seen before. The impact of the show has been incredible; boosting the local economy in Northern Ireland where the series is filmed and even inspiring the name change of Hertfordshire Town King's Langley to King's Landing to commemorate the franchise's success. More people than ever are diving into Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, the epic book series that the show is based on, and finding within its pages a doorway into a whole new world of literature.

Waiting on the other side of that door is Robin Hobb. The award-winning author has written five critically acclaimed fantasy series, and has achieved further literary success writing under her real name, Megan Lindholm. Her work is truly wonderful and beloved by fantasy fans the world over.

The event, which will take place on 19th August at the Freemasons' Hall on Great Queen Street, will be a conversation between the two epic-fantasy heavyweights, where they will discuss their books and creative process, including topics such as the building of fictional worlds, character creation, their influences, and how they have struggled and succeeded throughout their careers.

Tickets went on sale on Monday 28th July for £45 a seat, which might seem excessive for a 90 minute event with no signing, but it's worth considering the fact that a pre-signed hardback of Robin Hobb's new novel, Fool's Assassin (RRP £20), is included in the price, and that the chances of these two American authors getting together in London again is pretty unlikely.

Tickets are available to buy now from the Eventbrite website.

For those who find the price too high, are too young (all attendees must be 12 or over), or just can't make it, there is still a way to see the event, if not first hand. Tesco's e-book platform Blinkbox Books will be streaming the talk live through its Facebook page . While lacking the atmosphere of the real thing and taking away the chance to ask questions, this is a great opportunity for anyone who may have missed out on tickets.

Robin Hobb will be touring UK bookshops from 4th August until 17th. Full information on her UK appearances can be found on her website .

While he is here, George R.R. Martin will also be appearing at the Edinburgh book festival on 11th – 12th August and Loncon 3 (Worldcon) on 14th – 18th August. Information about these events are available on his website .
