While they don't sell the cheapest burritos in Edinburgh, they definitely serve the best, and Illegal Jack's has been a favourite in the city since 2009. It's gives you good value for money, as portions and the original burrito are quite large.

After water damage from the flat above collapsed the roof in their previous premises on Lothian Road, Illegal Jack's moved to their current location after a Kickstarter campaign raised over £80,000 to restart their business. While the new locale is smaller, it has the same vibe, good music and great staff. The seats at the back of the restaurant are slightly awkwardly placed between the kitchen and the main restaurant, but the seats at the front of the restaurant are nice, and during the day there is plenty of natural daylight coming in through the large windows.



Like most tex-mex places, Illegal Jack's allows you to choose the content of your burritos. Their meat options are extensive, and cover flame grilled marinated chicken, steak, beef chilli, carnitas, wild and vegetarian haggis (caught in West Lothian). Other vegetarian options include vegetarian chilli and sauteed veg. To complete the burrito, there's a variety of rice, beans and salsa to chose from, and some cheese, guacamole and jalapeños. There are free refills for soft drinks, and an option of beers which rotate on a weekly basis.

If burritos aren't your thing, they also serve fajitas, quesadillas, tacos, nachos and chilli bowls. Furthermore, their Dr Phil Burrito is all the goodness of a burrito served in a bowl with tortilla chips on the side.



Personally, I can recommend the chicken burrito with pinto beans, rice, roasted salsa, cheese and sour cream. But really, everything on the menu is delicious. It's not a coincidence that this independent restaurant had a successful Kickstarter campaign to re-start it.
