Art lovers across the West Midlands are being invited to attend the launch of not one, but two thought-provoking exhibitions at a contemporary gallery in Birmingham. The Ikon Gallery, based in Oozells Square, Brindleyplace, is staging the two exhibitions alongside each other, from 9 February to 21 April 2024. The art gallery is inviting people to join them on 8 February for the launch of the two displays. The event, which is free to attend, takes place between 5pm and 7pm.
The two exhibitions are Start the Press! and Exodus Crooks: Epiphany (Temporaire). The centrepiece of Start the Press! is an antique, flatbed printing press from Wolverhampton School of Art. During the course of the exhibition, a group of printmakers from across the West Midlands will operate the vintage press - establishing a functioning printmaking workshop. As a result, over the space of ten weeks, the printmakers will produce a collection of original prints which will gradually fill the gallery walls as the artwork is made in real-time.

At the same time as Start the Press! Ikon will also be hosting Midlands-based artist Exodus Crooks’ exhibition Epiphany (Temporaire) between 9 February and 21 April next year. The exhibition, commissioned by Ort Gallery and International Curators Forum (ICF), and curated by Orphée Kashala, includes sculpture, film, text and sculptural installation. Exodus is a British-Jamaican multidisciplinary artist, educator and writer whose art practice centres on the relationship with self.
Both exhibitions form part of Ikon’s 60th anniversary year in 2024.
