I Gave It 90 Minutes, That's Enough Of 'I Give It A Year'

New British rom-com 'I Give It A Year' hits the cinemas this Friday with a great line up for a cast, but just lacking in the comedy department.



Dan Mazer writes and directs this romantic comedy that stars an array of British talent including Rafe Spall, Stephen Merchant, Minnie Driver, Australian Rose Byrne and also the American star Anna Faris. This isn't Mazar's first entry into the comedy world as he co-wrote Borat, Bruno and Ali G along with Sacha Baron Cohen. It's fair to say he has a great back catalogue, but does this add credit to his already established comedy greats?

The script is interesting as it is not the normal narrative you expect from a romantic comedy, but I won't spoil the plot now. I think Dan has thought about the film well as every scene is smooth and delivers the narrative perfectly. My only quarrel with the script is whether the plot has enough about it in the first place. Another issue I have is the comedy. Some scenes are hilarious but then some are poor, making the comic sequences so hit and miss putting a huge negative on the movie as a whole for me.

I mentioned above about the cast with a mass of talent on display, however, much like the comedy I found them to be hit and miss too. I found Rafe Spall and Minnie Driver stealing the show with Rose Byrne being lacklustre as a leading lady. Stephen Merchant was really notable but he wasn't given enough screen time to collect more laughter from the audience. Olivia Coleman provided some good scenes as a mental counsellor trying to help the married couple with their problems.



The Verdict
To sum up, I found the comedy uninspiring at times with hit and miss comedic scenes which really let the film down. It's very annoying because if the film was a little more polished then it would be a great rom-com but there are just times where you pull a face at the screen when you should be laughing. If you stick with the film through its jaded times, you will get the odd gift of a hilarious scene. My favourite sequence being the digital photo frame with the parents, I do recommend that.
