There are a few spots in Brixton which are known by many. There's the Ritzy Cinema, for arthouse or mainstream films, Barrio, for all things Peruvian, Brixton Village for a touch of culture and POP Brixton for street food and communal dining. And there was the Grand Union pub, which is now the Hope & Anchor.

There's been a bit of a reshuffle, and this Brixton fave has had a "makeover that even Miley Cyrus would struggle to compete with".
A 10-15 minute walk from Brixton Station, past the epic Town Hall and Blues Kitchen. It's long enough of a walk to work up an appetite and perfectly placed for pub grub if you live nearby.
It goes without saying that the Hope & Anchor is not your average pub. The place is positively dripping with glamour. There are the modern day necessities: neon lights, edgy mannequins, missing half a torso and stuffed with flowers, and glossy ceramic brickwork.

There's a (near-enough) resident dog, the sweetest puppy bounding around and having a substantial fuss made of him. Resident DJs play on Friday and Saturday nights into the early morning.
When you step inside, you can see why it's a favourite of Brixton-ites. On top of a gratifying menu, there's a massive beer garden out back which is heated during the winter months. Well-known in Brixton and beyond, here's what you need to know: there are fairy lights, Tiki huts and a cinematic sized screen.

To start, we dipped into the Somerset Camembert with Hiver Honey & Thyme and Sourdough Bread (£12.50) and the Crab Croquettes (£6.50) which were stunning but extremely garlicky - beware if you're on a first date.

For mains, we had the Chicken Burger (£9.50), which is stacked with a buttermilk breaded chicken breast, avocado, maple-cured bacon, and Sriracha mayo. Need I say more? It doesn't come with fries, but I'd recommend the curly fries to satisfy the 90s child inside of you (and they always taste better than regular fries).

Other highlights include a fully vegan pizza, the Vegetarian Burger made with crispy beetroot, fennel, lentils and mozzarella, and the pub-classic - Pale ale-battered cod with triple-cooked chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce.
The Brie & Bacon Cranberry Stuffed Chicken with Sweet Potato Hash is from the Winter Retreat Menu, which is available until 28 February 2018. The offer is 2 meals for £20, Monday - Saturday, and other than the stuffed chicken (a definite recommendation), there's Wild Boar Meatballs, with roasted carrots and buttered mash; Beef & Parsnip Pudding, with homemade mash potato and gravy; or an English Crown of Turkey & Leek Pie, with homemade mash potato. It's all about the mash.
If you're only free on a Sunday, there's a pretty stellar Sunday Roast, with choices of Striploin of Beef, Lemon & Thyme Chicken, Mixed Nut Roast or Roasted Cauliflower Cheese. Get roasting from 12 midday every Sunday, and a live vinyl DJ arrives at 2pm until 6pm.
P.s. There are giant Yorkshire puddings. Sold.
