Whether you're looking for something specific or just being nosy, the auction house on Chiswick High Road is a great place to wander around on a weekend. Viewings take place from 10am until 6pm on a Saturday and Sunday, and it's a bit like walking into Aladdin's cave, with jewellery, furniture, pictures, antiques and collectables all on display in one big viewing room.
It's fascinating to see what old treasures people are parting with, and also to see the reserve price they're after. A lot of it is surprisingly affordable, so if you spot something you fancy bidding on, the auction is every Tuesday evening from 6pm. You don't have to attend in person if you don't want to, you can leave your bid beforehand, bid online, or bid by telephone. The website has more information on this. If you're spurred on to sell something of your own, valuations take place 7 days a week, so you can easily check what something is likely to sell for while you're there.
Once you're done perusing, there is a lovely cafe-bar inside that boasts to have the "best coffee in Chiswick". It's open from 10am until 6pm and has an array of cakes, sandwiches, salads, soups and snacks to send you on your way.
The auction house is located at 30-34 Chiswick High Road, and is about a 5 minute walk from Stamford Brook tube station. There are also regular buses running up and down the high street and metered parking is available nearby.
