Hebden Bridge: A Stroll Along the Canalside

The Yorkshire town of Hebden Bridge had been described to me variously as the spiritual hub of the North of England, the lesbian capital of the world and the "Pennine Centre".

It turned out to be a quirky and beautiful town with great opportunities for walking down by the canal.



After taking in the tea shop and other little spots in the town, we wandered down past the cinema and tourist information office to the canal and enjoyed the always wonderful sight of narrowboats moored up.

After talking to the friendly guy in the tourist information, we headed past the canalside Little Theatre and crossed over the small bridge.



Since being back in the UK, my girlfriend and I have completed an unintentional tour of waterways. From the Regents Canal in London through Foxton Locks in Leicestershire and then the Leeds - Liverpool canal in Burscow and Leeds we finished up at this, the Rochdale canal in Hebden Bridge.



We wandered along the towpath on what was a relatively mild January day, and took in the plants growing by the side of the canal.



Terraced houses line the banks and down a side street we could see a huge chimney, giving away the industrial past of this sleepy town.



Some of the people living on boats down here clearly have a sense of humour. We particularly liked Marge the Barge.





About halfway along our walk was the Alternative Technology centre, unfortunately closed at the time of our visit. We peered in the windows and at the signs they had outside and it seems they are involved in some interesting projects.





We rounded the corner to see the great reflection under the bridge, a lovely image which is reflective of the walk as a whole.





Finally we ended up at the Stubbing Wharf pub, our destination for a cheeky half before heading back into town and back to Halifax.
