The Hare the Tortoise is a well known tale. A speedy hare who likes to brag is challenged to a race by a slow tortoise. Thinking he has all the time in the world, the hare stops by the side of the road to take a nap. While he is dozing the tortoise, who has not given up, overtakes him at a crawling pace. The hare wakes up only to find out that "slow and steady wins the race." One of Aesop's fables, the story has been retold in many forms, and now is at Nuffield Southampton Theatres produced by Pied Piper Theatre Company. The show is on for just one day as part of their Saturday Children's Theatre program on Saturday 3 February 2018.
Pied Piper Theatre Company's Hare and Tortoise is a delightful piece of theatre. There is little dialogue, but the two characters are brought to life through their movement and expressive features. The set is warm and colourful, taking the characters through the four seasons with growing flowers, fresh carrots, falling leaves and umbrellas full of slow. It's filled with all of the energy and imagination of children's play.
The performance is perfect for younger audiences and is well suited to school groups. The Pied Piper Theatre Company website also has resources for school groups as well as other fun activities that could be used at school or at home.
The show features just two characters. The Tortoise, played by Ebony Feare, and the Hare, played by Stefan Stuart. The two are not just competitors in the race, but they are also friends and their friendship is an important part of the story. The other main message is one that is very important in this day and age: the need to just let go, take it slow and enjoy the things around you.
Tickets for Hare and Tortoise are £6 each and can be purchased online from the Nuffield Southampton Theatres' website. There are two Saturday performances, one at 11am and one at 2pm. The show is suitable for children over 3 years of age.
