The
Google Photography Prize is a competition aimed at students around the world.
Ten finalists in this unique competition will have the special honour of seeing their pictures displayed at the acclaimed
Saatchi Gallery in London. From these, one winner will be chosen to go on a trip that the competition organisers are calling "an amazing destination" - together with a professional photography coach.
A hundred shortlisted entrants will receive a Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone in recognition of their fine work, and all finalists will have their photographs showcased online for the world to enjoy.
The closing date is 31st January, 2011 and the contest is open to students in higher education who are 18 years or older on the submission date. Entrants do not have to be studying photography. Up to eight shots can be entered (in one category only) and you can enter just the once.
The competition is asking students to take "photographs that will make us laugh, cry, listen, hop on a plane, start a conversation, or start a revolution."
There are
10 categories to inspire you: Me, Food, Travel, Fashion, Action, Street, Sport, Night, Sound/Silence, Point of view.
The categories were chosen because they "relate to student life, are interesting creatively and shared frequently on the web." With a broad range like that, you shouldn't have any trouble coming up with the goods.
It doesn't matter whether you've got a basic camera-phone or the latest dSLR from Canon, photography is all about the person behind the lens. So grab your camera, pick a category and get shooting. It could bag you the trip of a lifetime.
