I'm sure you all know how daunting it can be to try something new for the first time. What is even more scary, however, is doing it in front of an audience. What if something goes wrong, what will people think, what will people say? Glasstress: White Light | White Heat is therefore a very brave exhibition, because it features work from students at the University of the Arts London, who have dipped their toe into glassmaking for the very first time. Artists include Alice Anderson, Boudicca, Hussein Chalayan, Mat Chivers, Mat Collishaw, Tracey Emin, Alastair Mackie, Helen Storey, Tim Noble & Sue Webster, and Gavin Turk.

They are all skilled in their own speciality, whether that be sculpture, weaving, painting, or photography, but this is new ground. Their work will be spread across two galleries until the 23rd February: The Wallace Collection and Fashion Space Gallery. Glassblowing is different to other forms of art in that it involves skilled manual labour like that of a carpenter or bricklayer. Working over a hot furnace is very different to sitting in a studio with a pot of paints. I expect the sculptors of the group will feel slightly more at home because they are familiar with moulding material into shapes, but it must have been a challenging and exciting experience for all involved.
