In the growing neighbourhood of Angel, many restaurants have opened recently in response to the demand. Nevertheless, an authentic Turkish and Mediterranean restaurant was established there in 1996 and has remained popular since then. If you happen to be in the area and looking for a differently tasteful meal, go straight to Gallipoli cafe!
As said by their website: "
two very passionate and extremely driven individuals, Enver and Erdal Ucar" opened their first of what would go on to become a chain of three Gallipoli restaurants in the same district. They offer a variety of traditional Mediterranean dishes, different from what is offered in the famous London kebab shops. I honestly don't have a favourite meal as everything is very tasty, so maybe go for the classic meals. Everything is also very healthy and made from fresh produce.
The lunch menu has two courses offer for £9 and three courses at £11, as well as a party menu with two courses for £16. The main courses offered are, among others, lamb or chicken guvec (diced lamb/chicken pan cooked with tomatoes, onions and mushroom, topped with grated cheddar and served with rice), imam bayildi (aubergine delicately fried and stuffed with a traditional vegetable mixture and chickpeas, served with rice and salad) and a mix meze platter (freshly prepared hummus, baba ghanoush, sasuka, cacik, kisir and falafel served with toasted pitta). The normal menu also has dishes from £4.50 like the hummus or the cacik.
The most interesting asset of this restaurant is the decoration, inspired by Ottoman decor, with dangling lamps and trinkets hanging from the ceiling and framed prints on the wall in a collage display. They also host events during the evenings, such as belly dancers. You can even ask to have these dancers for birthday celebrations.
If you happen to go there, you'll see the restaurant is easily recognisable by its bright blue exterior, contrasting with the bright yellow walls inside. So different from the grey and white houses of London. You can also get their food from Deliveroo, Take Eat Easy and UberEATS.
