Folk duo
Fritillaries share their name with a spring flowering plant, so they should feel right at home when they visit Birmingham on September 8, 2022 - their gig is at the aptly named
Kitchen Garden Café in Kings Heath.
Formerly named Rainy Day Woman, the duo - childhood friends Hannah Pawson and Gabriel Wynne - changed their moniker to one that they felt better reflected their organic, rustic music. They were inspired to choose 'Fritillaries' after reading a poem written by Hannah's mother that referenced the bulb. The poem also inspired the song,
Unearthing, the first single from their debut album.
Hannah and Gabriel hail from Exmouth in Devon but have been based in Bristol since 2020. They bonded over their love of music, performing Bob Dylan and Neil Young covers in Devon's folk clubs. They began adding their own songs and decided to work towards recording an album. Their forthcoming tour will showcase that eponymous disc, released on
Pear O'Legs Records .
The Birmingham gig is one of four on their 10-date UK tour that features Andy Hamill on double bass and Kit Massey on violin, adding another dimension to the guitar, mandolin and banjo played by Hannah and Gabriel. The music itself is sometimes upbeat and bold, sometimes slow and contemplative, combining Americana instrumentation and English folk roots with a pop song sensibility.
