A Night at the Museum, sans Ben Stiller

Planked out in the garden area of this tremendous venue, are 10 odd fun art deco chairs, which give you the impression of being sat on a spinning top. Perhaps a highlight of my evening, I quickly became absorbed by the sensation of floating, feet in air, without having to jump on a dizzying ride. After a hard week at work, popping down to the local pub, bar or club may become slightly tedious. Luckily, the V&A, the world's greatest museum of art and design, hosts alternative culture-rich evenings of light entertainment with its Friday Late event. Held every last Friday of the month, you can expect some hearty live performances, cutting-edge fashion, and late-night exhibition openings in various rooms of the museum to keep you in the party mood.

Enjoying some great food during the event doesn't come any easier than this. Located in the first ever museum restaurant in history, the V&A cafe offers a variety of freshly made food at the Morris, Gamble and Poynter rooms. Home to quite possibly the best dessert cake I have had in years, there is something for everyone, and not to mention, no shortage of beer and wine. You will also find that most Friday Late live performances take place in and around the cafe, giving you no need to scurry about looking for the most "happening" rooms.

While at Friday Late, there are a few things that you shouldn't miss, and one of them is popping into the V&A shop at some point throughout the evening. Stumbling into it myself, I was delighted to find a number of exciting gifts and souvenirs on offer. During my time there, I came across the funkiest flip-out pocket mirror, vintage scarves and playful moustache keyrings, which I model proudly above. I was particularly taken back when I set my eyes on the shop's handmade retro reading glasses and almost wished I needed them. If like me, you're keen on taking a little something home to remember your time at a new place you have visited the V&A shop will certainly feel like playground heaven.

Easily accessible via tube or London buses, the museum is based just a few minutes' walk from South Kensington underground station and opens its doors for the Friday Late event from 18:30 to 22:00. Entry is free and you can find out about any special events on the V&A Activities page.

Getting to the V&A as early as possible is highly advisable in order to avoid missing out on exploring the museum's many world galleries before the Friday Late event begins.
