Two free art exhibitions are continuing into 2018 at
Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust 's Waterside Gallery. Brierley Hill's Nine Locks Art Group's display can be seen at the gallery in the Portal Visitor Centre until January 22, while Midland artist Chris Reade is exhibiting his watercolours until January 8.
It is a brand new display by Brierley Hill's Nine Locks Art Group, following the success of their exhibition at the Portal earlier in 2017. Led by their tutor, Tim Nash, this small gathering of like-minded people meets every Monday at Brierley Hill Neighbourhood Learning Centre to discuss and develop their painting skills.
Works on display range from canalside views and winter landscapes to studies of nature, in a variety of styles and media. All artworks are for sale and vary in price from £40 to £140.
"
We're so excited for Nine Locks Art Group to be back at the Portal's gallery space," says Holly Wain, Heritage Activities Assistant at Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust.
Local artist Chris Reade exhibited as part of the Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust's first
Open Exhibition in the summer. He is now presenting his own solo exhibition at the gallery. The delicate watercolours displayed include winter wonderlands, historical scenes and local landscapes.
Chris began painting seriously at the end of 2000. He got involved in a part-time watercolour course at Leasowes Community College, organised in conjunction with the Tim Nash School of Fine Art.
Chris had always been a great admirer of work completed by his father, who for many years was a member of the Wolverhampton Society of Artists, and having Tim as a tutor gave him the confidence to develop his skills."
There is something for everyone in this exhibition,'' says Holly Wain. ''
The original artworks are for sale at very reasonable prices, from £35 to £85, and you can know you are supporting local art and a local charity at the same time."
Established in 1970, the Dudley Canal Trust was created to protect and preserve a spectacular network of underground canal tunnels carved beneath the region to mine the raw materials that powered industrial growth. Through their subsidiary charity, Dudley Canal Trust (Trips) Ltd, they welcome over 70,000 visitors each year on to regular guided boat trips through the tunnels, accompanied by videos, lifelike reconstructions and music and light shows.
