Scott Brown, fresh out of Slade School, has spent a grand total of fourteen days getting reacquainted with Oldham, the place he apparently wanted to leave behind. His exhibition, rather straightforwardly titled Fourteen Days Exhibition, is the fruit of this speedy residency at 1853 Studios Mill 2 Gallery, which happens to be right next to where he grew up. It's all about what happens when you revisit your roots and actually look at what's there now, rather than just fondly (or not so fondly) remembering the past. Expect a contemporary take on a town that's steadily trying to redefine itself, politely acknowledging its industrial history but very much focused on its present.
Scott's approach is quite intuitive, and he seems to find meaning in the sheer act of putting a show together. You'll see a bit of everything: painting, sculpture, photography, and collage, all mashed up from various sources he's collected. He's on the hunt for what he calls 'affective traces' in existing stuff, which sounds rather mysterious. He admits his childhood memories of Oldham are a bit hazy now, which probably helps with seeing the town on its own terms. As he puts it, fourteen days isn't exactly a lifetime, but it's all he had. If you fancy a gander, there's a preview shindig on Friday 4th July from 6pm to 9pm with some refreshments. The show then runs from 5th to 26th July, open Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 11am and 4pm. Keep an eye out for details on a public programme, which are still TBC.
