Irish Singing Duo Still Going Strong After 40 Years
Four decades on and still going strong. Such is the outstanding legacy of singing duo Foster and Allen who are celebrating their longevity in style by bringing their 40th Anniversary Tour to the UK. this autumn. Foster and Allen, which consists of Irish musical duo Mick Foster and Tony Allen, have achieved album and video sales totalling more than 22 million worldwide.
Musical duo celebrating their 40th anniversary
During their 40-year career they have released more than 30 albums, many of which entered the UK albums chart. And along the way they also scored singles chart success with A Bunch of Thyme and Maggie, the latter becoming No.1 in New Zealand for four weeks, making the two songs their signature tunes that have stood the test of time. And now Foster and Allen, who expanded their original duo in 1982 by adding a band, are back on the road again, which includes a visit to the Lichfield Garrick theatre on November 16.

To commemorate their 40 years together in the music business, Foster and Allen will be performing all their old hits as part of their anniversary tour. As well as Bunch of Thyme and Maggie, fans can also expect the likes of After All These Years and Old Flames. But there will also be some of their recent recordings such as Gold & Silver Days and songs from their Celebration CD. And, as if to prove that the boys are still happy to keep going, they have just released a new DVD to mark their 40 years together, entitled We Owe It All To You.
It is all a long way from their humble beginnings in the 1970s when Mick and Tony were playing in country music bands around Ireland. They decided to put together a small band in 1975 and go across to the UK to perform in Irish music venues on a short tour and the rest, as they say, is history after deciding to let the band go back to Ireland while they stayed behind to try out as a duo. And huge success came their way when, in 1978, they released A Bunch of Thyme in their native Ireland and watched it become their first top-selling No.1 by topping the Irish singles charts. But it was four years later, in 1982, that it was released in the UK and made the top 20, also resulting in an unlikely appearance on Top of the Pops.
Lichfield theatre plays host to Foster and Allen on 40th anniversary
Since those early days Foster and Allen have regularly toured the UK but also performed all over the world including the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, enjoying five No.1 hits in Australia/New Zealand over the years. And they continue to draw large crowds to their live concerts. Not bad for what many people may regard as a middle-of-the-road 'easy listening' act. Foster and Allen will be playing at the Lichfield Garrick theatre on Wednesday 16 November starting at 7.30pm. Tickets priced £21.50 are available online or by calling the Box Office on 01543 412121.
