Experimental and often uncomfortable, this avant garde production was like a theatrical version of a Chapman Brothers art installation with dark, menacing, end-of-world themes.
Focussing on forest scenes in Shakespeare's varied portfolio of work, award-winning director Calixto Bieto used English and Catalan to move between the lovers and war-torn fighters.

The second half is more memorable for its gloomy, war themes.
A naked woman screaming, Ophelia lying dead on a mound of soil with a plastic bag over her face and a huge tree at the centre of the stage uprooted to hang above all the destruction and menace.

This section also includes long periods of full frontal female nudity.
It contrasts strongly with the opening half when the giggling cast dizzily run around the tree in a haze of romance spouting words of love.

Among the cast is George Costigan, star of Alan Clarke's Rita, Sue and Bob, Too film, who stands out in each of the brief sections that he takes centre stage.

If you enjoy it for what it is, it is unusual and interesting, but the mix of quotations is also confusing and often incomprehensible.
It is advisable to brush up on your Shakespeare plays before you go to have any chance of vaguely understanding what is going on.
T
he production is 1h40minutes and part of the World Shakespeare Festival 2012.

Forests runs at The Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham from August 31, 2012, until September 15, 2012, and then will tour Europe before performing at The Barbican in London.

It is a production in association with Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company, Barcelona Internacional Teatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
