If you haven't heard of a pop up shop before, it's one that opens temporarily and can sell just about anything. Sometimes they're around for just a day and other times a few weeks.
Flash in the Pan pops into Oxford once a year and this festive season it can be found in Oxford's busy Summertown.
I was tempted in by the display of Christmas trees for sale outside. Lush and green there's nothing that gives that Yuletide feeling quite like it. Outside were also wreaths, holly with shiny red berries and a big box of mistletoe. A little bit of mistletoe could get you the Christmas kiss you're after. The Christmas trees are from Three Tree Fellas and £1 from every sale is donated to this years chosen charity, The Art Room.
Inside it's a treasure trove of all things lovely and you if you can bear to part with your purchases, you could find some unique and thoughtful presents.
There's a sparkling range of jewellery. A large table displayed some gorgeous silver pieces or why not add a splash of colour with some finer bracelets and necklaces.
For the food connoisseurs, you are greeted with a tempting range of delicious treats including
Mariella Bliss Authentic Italian Food. . Also featured are
Fino Olive Oils direct from the producer in Spain which you can sample in the store. Their olives are handpicked and pressed at a local village co-operative, but the flavoured oils are infused here in Oxford.
Artwork descorates all the walls and I was particularly taken by the linocuts from artist
Susan Wheeler . I think this might require a large hint to my husband before Christmas. Her technique is to create drawings and paintings first and then translate them into linocuts.
There are also a range of soft items from handspun and handloomed woven organic tablecloths to beautiful scarves and rugs.
Ceramics also feature strongly at Flash in the Pan. The serene and delicate pieces from
Rebecca Callis "exhibit an understated elegance". Alternatively you could go for something bold like the blue and white spotted eartheware from
Bridget Williams .
Tucked into its own little area in the shop are the sort of presents any child would adore on Christmas day. Teddy Bears, decorations and three little soldiers all caught my eye. There's also a good range of eye catching books.
As you would imagine in a shop popping up just before Christmas, there are lots of wonderfully crafted Christmas decorations. I couldn't resist buying a few white painted tin hearts for my tree this year.
The chosen charity for 2012 is the Oxford based
The Art Room . They "offer art as therapy to children and young people to raise their self-esteem, self-confidence and independence. There are Art Room gifts for sale at the shop with proceeds going to the charity.
Flash in the Pan are also running some special events throughout December. Still to come are the following.
15th December 1-4pm - A decoration workshop for all ages with
Francesca Shakespeare . Francesca has been based in Oxford since 1997 and is experienced at running workshops for children at the Ashmolean Museum and Botanical Gardens.
16th December 2-3:30pm £4. This is your chance to meet Winnie the Witch and Korky Paul with stories and drawings.
Don't forget this is a pop up shop and won't be here for long. If you fancy a visit then you'll need to get there by 22nd December which is their last day.
