Birmingham is as far away from the coast as you can get in the UK but theatregoers at
The Alexandra will get a whiff of the sea and the sound of sailors' shanties, thanks to the visit of
Fisherman's Friends: The Musical . Based on the true story of the Cornish singing sensations,
Fisherman's Friends , and the hit 2019 film about their life, the show is at The Alexandra from September 13 till September 17, 2022.
It tells the tale of a group of Cornish fishermen who came together to sing the traditional working songs they'd sung for generations, hoping to raise money for charity. Nobody, least of all the fishermen, expected their story to end on the Pyramid stage of Glastonbury.
Packed with sea shanties made famous by the band, including
Keep Haulin', Nelson's Blood and
No Hopers, Jokers & Rogues, the show is a feel-good voyage about comradeship, community and music.
Performing locally since 1995, the collective signed a major record deal in 2010. Their album,
Port Isaac's Fisherman's Friends, went gold and they became the first traditional folk act to land a UK top 10 album. Since then they've been the subject of an ITV documentary, released the hit albums
One and All (2013),
Proper Job (2015),
Sole Mates (2018) and
Keep Hauling (2019) and played to hundreds of thousands of fans at home and abroad.
They sang for The Queen at her Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012, they were selected to sing for Prince Charles and Camilla during their 2016 tour of Cornwall and were honoured with the Good Tradition Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2011.
Directed by James Grieve and written by Amanda Whittington,
Fisherman's Friends: The Musical stars
James Gaddas (
Casualty, Coronation Street),
Susan Penhaligon (
Bouquet of Barbed Wire, Emmerdale), Robert Duncan (
Drop the Dead Donkey, Casualty), Parisa Shahmir (
The Last Ship, the UK tour of
Mamma Mia!) and Anton Stephans (
The X Factor). Also appearing are Jason Langley, Dan Buckley, Dakota Starr, Pete Gallagher and Hadrian Delacey.
The UK tour follows a highly successful, sold-out season at Hall for Cornwall, where box office records were smashed, making it the biggest selling production in Hall for Cornwall's 25-year history.
