Fashion as Community Week is dedicated to exploring issues related to fashion including sustainability, social good and well being. It is an opportunity for discussion about developing ways to use fashion and design to improve communities and bring them together. Southampton Solent University have a program of discussions, workshops and debates that will put all of these issues in the spotlight. Fashion as Community Week runs from Monday 8th of January till Friday 11th of January.



Interrelation of Textiles, Repair & Mindfulness

This workshop explores the connection between mindfulness and textiles, demonstrating ways that mending can be a mindful and sometimes cathartic experience. Participants are asked to bring along an item of clothing to repair, or something like a blanket that they can work on during the workshop.

TRAID: Can the Fashion Community be Sustainable

Lead by Sarah Klymkiw from TRAID, this talk explores sustainability in the fashion industry and the way we can make our fashion choices more sustainable. It will deal with topics like the stigma surrounding charity shops as well as the way that many clothes are designed to be short term products. TRAID is an organisation that works towards ending child labour and improving conditions for garment workers around the world.

Transform Waste into Resources

Freegle founder Cat Fletcher will be asking you to change your thinking when it comes to waste. Instead of looking at waste as something you throw away, this talk wants you to look at is as a resource that can be used to create something new. The talk will look at waste at festivals and in fashion, and look at ways you can make your choices a little less wasteful.

The Pants Project

At this event you'll get to learn a little more about the partnership between Southampton Solent University fashion students and the Beatrice Project, an organisation in Zimbabwe that provides sanitary products to women in need. The fashion students have partnered with the Beatrice Project and are providing pants that will also be distributed around the rural communities. As well as learning a bit more about this project, there will also be a session held in the afternoon where you can contribute to the project by either sewing pants or helping back them to send away.

Writing Poetry as Polution

Hugh Greasley is interested in the plastic you find in the sea and on the beach. So interested in fact that he writes poetry about it. This talk will discuss poets that have used pollution as a motif and an inspiration for their work and will be followed by a workshop about using objects to create poetry.

Southampton Repair Cafe Workshop

The Southampton Repair Cafe is a place where you can go when you've got something that needs mending. The idea is that you can likely find the tools you need, and usually also someone with a few more skills that can give you some tips and tricks to complete your repair. There will be a special pop up repair cafe in the Herbert Collins Building as part of Fashion as Community Week, with a focus on clothing repairs.

Circular Fibres Initiative

The Circular Fibres Initiative is working towards making clothing more sustainable by changing how clothes are made, how we use them, and what we do with them when we're finished wearing them. The talk will look at the environmental impact of garment manufacturing, from the products items are made of, to the way we view our clothes and their use.



Fashion as Community Forum

The Fashion as Community Week forum will feature a series of talks on topics that have been presented during the week. There is a focus on sustainability and social change and the role of the community and the fashion industry. Staff from Southampton Solent University's fashion program will also be presenting talks as part of the forum.

Industry Panel Presentations and Debate

One of the final events of the week is the Industry Panel Presentations and Debate. The event will feature presentations from fashion costume designer Alex Noble, the global sustainability in fashion movement, Fashion Revolution, and Tony Credland, lead tutor from London College of Communication's MA in Graphic Design. This will be an opportunity to hear many of the themes of the week discussed and debated by some leading industry professionals.

The Fashion as Community Week program is varied, and provides many speakers and many insights into the fashion industry. Anyone with an interest in fashion will find the sessions interesting and worthwhile, but it will also be a great opportunity for anyone who has ever been concerned with the fast fashion industry.
