Persian Cuisine in the heart of East Sheen
Faanoos Persian Restaurant on Upper Richmond Road was a place my husband and I had walked past time and time again but for some reason never gone in. However, after recently hearing a glowing recommendation from a friend, we decided to give it a go for lunch one day. It was such a pleasant experience, and the food so delicious, that we can't believe we had left it so long. On entering, the friendly waitress seated us in the window and bought over a highchair for our little one. We very quickly had drinks in front of us while we scoured the mouth-watering, and extremely inexpensive, menu.

To start with we ordered the freshly baked Persian bread costing just £1. It is baked to order in the traditional clay oven at the front of the restaurant and is served straight to the table. It is warm, soft and very tasty – our little girl loved it, especially when combined with a fresh yoghurt dip. For mains, I chose marinated grilled fillet of lamb with saffron rice and tomato, priced at £9.50.

The lamb was succulent and the rice fluffy and light. I was extremely pleased with my choice and devoured every morsel. My husband, who is vegetarian, ordered a delicious looking meat-free option made up of aubergines and peppers in a tomato and herb sauce – a bargain at only £5.95. To wash it all down we had a couple of glasses of house white wine; their wine list is limited, but the restaurant does allow you the option to bring your own bottle for a small corkage fee. We didn't have dessert (a big mistake on hindsight) but the choices included baklavas or Persian ice cream.

Overall we had a lovely lunch at Faanoos and I can't wait to go back and try some of the other dishes on offer, such as marinated chicken skewers. The restaurant was ambient with Iranian themed décor adorning the walls and traditional music playing in the background. You can even request a sheesha if you fancy having the full Middle-Eastern experience.

Faanoos Restaurant has a bus stop right outside with buses heading in the direction of Richmond or Putney. It is also a short walk from Mortlake Station. Check out their website for a full menu. Takeaway is also available.
