October 2024 marks a whole decade since Elizabeth Gaskell's House flung open its doors to the public after a much-needed facelift. To mark the occasion, they've whipped up a special exhibition featuring tales from those who had a hand in the rescue mission. You'll hear from people like Janet Allan, the fearless campaign leader, and Frank Galvin, who fancies himself the 'House detective'—a title that's equally impressive and a bit vague. The exhibit takes you on a journey from the house being a sad shell to its current gorgeous self, sprinkled with some cake and lifelong friendships. It's basically the underdog story we all secretly live for.
The cherry on top of this exhibition cake is an anniversary quilt made by textile artist Dr Sarah-Joy Ford, inspired by the heartfelt stories shared throughout the project. So, if you're keen to discover how a bit of community spirit transformed a crumbling relic into a cherished part of history, this is your chance. And don't worry, your admission covers this slice of history and inspiration, leaving just enough room for that cake.
