"I've Never Read Elizabeth Gaskell" is an exhibition exploring what happens when you introduce three talented young Manchester writers to a literary giant they had, well, never actually read. Georgia Affonso, Princess Arinola Adegbite, and Guruleen Kahlo were invited to spend some time getting to grips with Elizabeth Gaskell's world. They explored her not only as a formidable writer but also as a woman with a keen eye for social justice, all while bringing their own Manchester perspectives to the table. This project, dreamed up in collaboration with The Writing Squad and Manchester City of Literature, also neatly coincides with ten years since Elizabeth Gaskell's House pulled itself up by its bootstraps from being rather abandoned to becoming Manchester's cherished, and only, literary house.
So, if you are curious to see what creative sparks fly when writers who originally knew precisely nothing about Gaskell suddenly find themselves immersed in her universe, this exhibition aims to reveal just that. You can wander through the house and discover their experiences as writers in residence, along with the very interesting work they produced during their deep dive into a world that, for them, was completely new territory. It is on from July 6, 2025, right through to November 9, 2025, open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, from 11 in the morning until half past four in the afternoon.
