I'm discovering Southampton along with you!
Event: -
Part of the National Theatre's Youth Connections Festival
Chris Thompson's Dungeness is set in LGBTIQ safe-house, shared by a bunch of teenagers in a remote part of the UK. They live in a quiet town, and they're all still figuring out who they are and how they want to express that to the world. When the teenagers hear about an attack on other LGBTIQ teens in another part of the world, they want to take action and protest. Amongst all this they're still having to deal with their own problems as well.

The show is at the Nuffield Southampton Theatres new City: Studio from Thursday 5 April till Saturday 7 April, with a 7:30pm showing each night. Dungeness is performed by the Nuffield Southampton Youth Theatre. On closing night there will also be a post show panel talk that is free for ticket holders and provides an option to learn more about the cast and the production of the play.

It's full of humour, but also a lot of emotion. Thompson's Dungeness is a great show for teens and young people, whether they identify as LGBTIQ or not. Thompson was inspired to write the play based on his own experiences campaigning for equal rights, and to offer theatre for young people that features strong LGBTIQ voices. But the themes of witnessing injustice in the world and trying to figure out how you can make your voice heard are universal and extremely relevant in today's world.

Dungeness is part of the National Theatre Connections - an annual festival of plays designed to give school groups and youth theatres the opportunity to experience every aspect of producing, performing and marketing a professional production. As well as selecting the plays for these young performers to tackle, the National Theatre also provides support throughout the year. For more information on the Connections program, head to the National Theatre website.
