A haven for art lovers, the is comprised of the Gallery, the Tapestry Studio, a gift shop and speciality coffee shop.
The Gallery itself, heralded as a landmark centre for contemporary arts, craft and design, was built around the internationally acclaimed Tapestry Studio, established in 1912, and boasts every changing exhibitions. Last summer I really enjoyed spending a couple hours wandering around the amazing 'Scottish Endarkenment' exhibition, based on the works of Scottish artists post-1945, and the 'Dazzle' jewellery exhibition, curated on behalf of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Currently, you can go and enjoy the likes of 'Tuft Loving: Recent Rug Projects' and 'The Weavers Apprentice.' Sound good, right? With regularly changing exhibitions that are informative, engaging and full of variety, there's guaranteed to be something for all tastes!
After strolling around the free exhibitions head to the Viewing Balcony (bear in mind the opening times of the viewing balcony are limited.) Here you can watch the artists at work producing hand-woven tapestry and gun-tufted rugs. It's fascinating watching the weavers at work, you'll probably find yourself spending some time here! Continuing the heritage of the Dovecot studio, established over a century ago, the artists continue to produce world-class works that are all impressive, unique and stunning.
If you're looking to enjoy a day out soaking up local art, culture and amazing exhibitions in a beautiful setting that's a wee bit quieter than the National Galleries, here's the place! Located conveniently in the city centre, just off Nicholson Street, you don't have to wander far!
What's great is that you don't have to stray far for a tea/coffee break. Dovecot by Leo's has made its home in the Studio, and happens to be one of Edinburgh's speciality coffee shops, run by Leo's Beanery. Go and enjoy an artisan coffee or a selection of delicious and unique loose leaf teas! This place is a true extension of the main Studio with its cool and relaxed vibe. The gift shop is also well worth a visit, filled to the brim with beautiful goods and gifts.
