It will be a dog's life at Birmingham's New Alexandra Theatre as theatre chiefs hold doggy auditions to find a four-legged star for the forthcoming production of Annie.

One talented pooch will clinch a starring role in the major summer production at the venue.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes can audition for the role of Sandy - the canine co-star of loveable orphan Annie in this years' Stage Experience show.

Doggy auditions take place on Saturday August 3 at the Birmingham theatre.

A panel featuring the actress playing Annie will score pets on their ease with walking to and from a person on-stage as well as general personality and suitability around children.

Sandy can be male or female, midsize or large, and hopefully sandy in colour. It is also preferred if the animal is already registered as a performing dog.

The winning pooch will go on to star in the classic tale of the fiesty New York youngster at New Alexandra Theatre from Wednesday August 21 to Saturday August 25.

Andrew Lister, General Manager of the New Alexandra Theatre said: "We are always on the look-out for new talent for Stage Experience – and animals are no exception.

"We encourage owners who feel their pet meets the requirements to apply for doggy auditions and give them the chance to shine in this years' Stage Experience."

Stage Experience, which celebrates a decade in August, offers the best and brightest young talent from across the West Midlands the unique chance to work with a professional production team and perform with a live orchestra, on a full set on the New Alexandra Stage.

The entire show is created in just over two weeks, from rehearsing every day, sourcing props, setting the stage and costuming all cast members.

Owners should apply in the first instance by emailing [email protected] for an application form. The closing date is Wednesday July 31, 2013

Successful applicants will be contacted and will need to be available to audition on Saturday August 3. Auditions will be by appointment only.

The successful Sandy will need to be available on the evenings of Wednesday August 21 to Friday August 23, and at 2pm and 7pm on Saturday August 24.
