Dishoom, Birmingham

'
Bombay, like Birmingham, is a city of a thousand trades', says Dishoom's website. Which is a smart intro suggesting an independent menu and vibe to what is actually a chain of restaurants, (eight and counting).
The menu is interesting but simple, broken down into sections - Grills, Ruby Murray (I see what you did there), Biryani, Small Plates etc...
The restaurant is in a new building, in the enviable position, elevated, with a large terrace, overlooking Birmingham's art gallery and Town Hall, (for Brummies where the old library was). Imagine a sleek modern building with a historic Bombay inspired interior, (now Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) is a densely populated city on India's west coast). With wooden shelving, stained glass diffusing light, evocative Indian packaging, and covid friendly divisions that maintain intimacy well in what is a large space.
We sat outside, weather dependent, but they are undercover. Ordering a table full of mains and sides to share. Noting, an eclectic mix of okra fries, chicken biryani, samosa, large Koliwada prawn, naan, and blew the budget on Mutton Chaap Korma, (marinated chops of mutton in onion and cashew sauce, with roti). We was hungry okay!
In our opinion, the food was good. Very moreish. Definitely a licking lips, scrape the plate kind of evening, fighting over the last bit of naan to mop up some sauce. It's not cheap. But see the menu and make up your minds. But perhaps you get what you pay for. Noting friendly service, which made us feel like we'd had an experience. Not just dinner.
We booked as it was the evening, but they also have a breakfast menu.
Next on our agenda to try.
See you there...?
