You can feel it in the water; the change that's coming, that's happening as you read this screen, the soundwaves that are out of sync slightly, as the revolution to the way we dine is being altered. Modified if you will, and stripped back to a more simplistic, honest way of dining.


Think camp fires in the mountains and sausages being slightly charred, barbecues in the back garden even though it's raining, and noise - plenty of music, laughter and a general sound of enjoyment as people get their chops around the food on offer. This is what dining should be about: quality street food enjoyed in the company of those you love.

Imagine this on a large scale in the ever-exciting hub that is The Custard Factory. Always at the front of the queue, if not paving the way themselves, Digbeth has taken on the big leaguers and has undercut the alpha's that have too long dictated how and when we eat.

It is time for a revolution in dining, a less formal, less straight-laced approach to what we love doing. Eating is the most natural thing in the world and while we eat to stay alive, if that were the only way to look at food the idea of dining would be obsolete. Thus I introduce the new wave that has a cult following already: .


The London Supper Club has been going for months now and it's big on the London scene, but Birmingham is fast catching up by creating a new way to eat. began in August 2012 as a response to the overpriced council-funded Christmas Market that takes place every year.

Keen to offer an alternative, 'real' taste of what Birmingham has to offer, launched into the dining stratosphere and they haven't looked back.

Vendors are forever changing so you won't eat the same thing twice. That's not to say they're an unreliable food source, it's just that everyone wants to have a go, and DDC change their vendors in the interest of fairness. It also gives customers variety, and after all, variety is the spice of life.


It's a weekly event held at Spot*light club every Friday. I visited a couple of weekends ago when a few of my friends had come up from London. They wanted a 'taste of Birmingham', so of course we went along.

I wouldn't say my friends have refined palates but they know a good burger from a bad one and DDC really impressed us. Food aside, it has an organic vibe that you can soak up, and the DJ plays easy dance hits for an ambience you can't help but fall for.
