Derren Brown Showman at Alexandra Theatre Review

Master manipulator Derren Brown has been affected, like many of us, by Covid over the past three years and the effect of that is at the fore of this sentimental new show.



But don't get fooled by the touching, heartfelt moments in Showman as this is still a clever mystifying return from an artist at the top of his game. It's been over 20 years since Brown's Mind Control programme on Channel 4 broke new ground in illusion. That experience shows in a slick live show that uses lights, camera footage and action involving plenty of audience participation.

The tour is at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre until Saturday and is pulling in the crowds, who have obviously missed him.



Called Showman, it's a nod to circus guru Barnum whose skills paved the way for future generations like Brown. Not giving away any spoilers or details(as requested by Brown) limits this review somewhat. But what's clear is that Brown easily commands everyone's attention while being witty and personable too.

Covid lockdowns and losses bring out another side to this performer, who offers up many tales that seem close to his heart.
The emotion is weaved alongside a series of mind manipulation set pieces. Some of it resembles a more mysterious version of Mr and Mrs while other parts will leave you open-mouthed at Brown's levels of deduction.



Baffling, jaw-dropping and astounding throughout, it's first-class, well-thought out entertainment that always delights. Brown knows his audience well and doesn't disappoint. Although, it can seem unnerving at times and I did half wonder if I'd been brainwashed as I made my exit. There's big build ups to the key illusions and by the many gasps of disbelief, it's clear that Brown scrubs up to the showman title. I've no doubt PT Barnum would have approved.
