You may well have heard of Denmark Street, even if you have never seen it before...indeed you may not have even visited London.

The reason for this is simple - Denmark Street is the famous music street of London, and therefore has importance to the whole country, as some of the nation's biggest names started off here.

So, for a little history...

For the origins of music in Denmark Street we need to go back to the 1950's, as this is when a host of music publishers, including such names as NME and Melody Maker, were founded or had offices here - giving it the more famous nickname "Tin Pan Alley". By the 1960's the publishers had been replaced by music shops and independent studios - one of which saw early recordings by the Rolling Stones.

Later on the famous Gioconda Cafe, which was at no.9, saw some very well-known musicians walk through its doors - including David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix, with the Small Faces actually forming there.

By the Seventies those famous anti-popstars, the Sex Pistols, were living and recording here too. No further proof then needed as to the credentials of this music-infused street - it's as if musical dna runs through the brickwork of the street itself - if only the walls could speak...

Fast forward to now, and the music shops remain, with a couple of music venues to boot, though some of the original stores are starting to slowly be replaced by familiar brand name stores....

Also, if you have any inclination to come and visit - do it soon, as the street is under threat of no longer existing.
