From the makers of Near Gone and Manpower comes a new, highly visual show, Declining Solo. Combining text with choreography, video and specially commissioned music, Declining Solo is the sequel to Two Destination Language's award-winning shows.
A woman returns to visit her family home, and misses the one thing she values most: the father she remembers. It's in a place where there's singing and dancing and eating and drinking and being merry, and of friendships and familial links at the total core of communities. It's in a place where we still have mountains unadorned.
Where the summer smells of sun and the winter smells of burning coal. It's about a heyday, the heyday of a man. It's about ageing, about fading. I think if I piece it back together somehow – If the vase has been broken and I put back the pieces, it can get better.
Katherina Radeva, who hails from Bulgaria, explores her father's decline, in a new work that incorporates music, text and dance. Using memories of her father, Kat relays her experience of living far away from her place of birth and living in a fast-changing world. The show is about our mortality and how we feel it most keenly when watching those we love change.
Alister Lownie is the narrator, representing the stream of consciousness in Katherina's mind, as she travels through the story of her relationship with her father she no longer recognises and a world that seems increasingly unwelcoming. The set is built of huge pieces of paper suspended from the ceiling. Video taken in Katherina's father's home is intertwined with stories of her childhood, through to the present day where her father, the man who taught her how to navigate the world, can no longer navigate his.
Two Destination Language have adopted a way of working that suits the current climate for theatremakers, bringing in practitioners from specialisms across the theatre spectrum to help get ideas onto the stage. Led by artists Katherina Radeva and Alister Lownie, the work explores questions of identity, belonging and culture. Music is by Tim Blazdell and Choreography is by Robbie Synge.
