On Tuesday, 1st October 2024 at 7.30pm, Worksop Library is the place to be for those who fancy a bit of jazz-funk and poetry mixed together like a clever cocktail. Dave 'Stickman' Higgins is leading his ensemble in a night filled with catchy grooves and deep, thoughtful lyrics. This gig is part of the annual Inspire Poetry Festival, and you might just hear some fresh stuff inspired by the Beyond the Bassline exhibition currently hanging out in the library. So, whether you're a jazz aficionado or a poetry lover—or both—prepare yourself for a performance that straddles the line between musical genius and poetic brilliance.
Now, if you didn't know, Stickman has quite the history, having drummed for Kalima, a band that strutted its stuff under Manchester's oh-so-cool Factory Records. Now he's hanging out in his own ensemble with a bunch of equally talented musicians. With a line-up that includes guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, you're in for a sonic treat. Dave's work pulls from his rich heritage—his mum's from Barbados and his dad's from Bury. So come down to Worksop Library for a night where jazz-funk struts confidently alongside performance poetry, a combination as delightful as it sounds.
