A special service of remembrance and reflection is to be held at Lichfield Cathedral.in Staffordshire in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The event, which is being jointly organised by the cathedral and Lichfield District Council, takes place on Sunday 26 September at 3pm. It will be attended by representatives from the public sector, businesses, voluntary sector, charities and community groups. Members of families who have suffered a Covid-related bereavement are also being invited to come forward if they wish to attend the service. As part of the commemoration, a candle will be displayed for every individual in Lichfield district known to have passed away as a result of coronavirus. Councillor Doug Pullen, leader of Lichfield District Council, said: "Our main desire in holding this service is to remember all of the residents of Lichfield District who have died from Covid-19 along with families that have suffered a bereavement. We also want to take time to recognise the contributions made by businesses, the voluntary sector, charities, faith and community groups and public services in Lichfield District and across Staffordshire during the pandemic."



He added: "Whilst the service provides a time for reflection on the difficulties everyone has faced, we also very much intend that it will be an opportunity to look forward positively to a strong recovery in the post Covid-19 period for Lichfield District and our communities." The Dean of Lichfield, the Very Revd Adrian Dorber, said: "From March 2020, we have had to live through a time of extraordinary disruption and threat to our personal and community life. Now it's time to come together and reflect and remember. We want to lament the deaths and bereavements caused by Covid-19 by holding out our hands and support to the families and individuals affected. It's time to give thanks for the dedicated service and professionalism of all NHS staff, the good-hearted care and concern of volunteers and neighbours and the commitment and reliability of all key workers. The cathedral, throughout its history, has held the prayers, hopes and fears of all generations. It is also a place where hope and new beginnings can be cherished, especially now as we seek a new future and the wisdom to guide us."



Local residents who suffered a Covid-related bereavement and wish to attend the service of Remembrance and Recovery are asked to contact Lesley Bennett at Lichfield District Council by emailing [email protected]. There will be some restrictions on numbers able to attend the service so families are asked to get in touch as soon as possible.
