Coco de Mer is the sort of erotica emporium that makes proper ladies feel too good to be true. They stock everything from antique kimonos and rare works of erotic fiction to more modern devices of pleasure; and more importantly their wares are displayed with class and decorum, and introduced by very knowledgeable and comfortable staff, so that shopping here is far more fun than sordid.
The name, which comes from the palm trees in the Seychelles with those beautifully suggestively shaped coconuts, gives away a lot about the ethos of this place, which is basically: sex is lovely and fun and should be had the way you like it. Not all ladies find it easy to frequent a sex shop, but with the satin and lace lingerie at the front, sex toys in the middle, and more fetish stuff at the back - with texts by Anaïs Nin, museum pieces and other exotic, but not always erotic, items of loveliness dotted throughout – this store is easy to walk into with your head held high.
In some senses this is a museum to what's possible, sexually, but however far your imagination stretches there should be something here that tickles your fancy, whether you're just browsing for possibilities or you know exactly what you want.
