Discover what the city trendsetters are drinking
Birmingham shopping and restuarant complex The Mailbox has taken its wining and dining experience online with the introduction of a new Cocktails Facebook app which highlights where visitors can enjoy their favourite tipple and suggests the trendiest cocktails on offer.
Signature cocktails include Southern Soul (Southern Comfort with orange, lemon and mango, topped with lemonade), Velvet Elvis (Jack Daniel's and Chambord Raspberry Liqueur with lemonade) and after dinner special After Eight-Thirty (Baileys, Creme de Menthe and Creme de Cacao, shaken with cream). I asked barman Valentino Wielowski to mix me another speciality, Summer Sling, a refreshing tipple on a hot night, which combined Bombay Sapphire, elderflower, mango, mint and apple juice and a splash of lemonade.
This Champagne bar has been in the Mailbox for 11 years and, as well as food and drink, boasts live piano music provided by students from Birmingham Conservatoire. General Manager Carl Jones explains that Champagne cocktails are Bar Eperney's speciality. Peach and Strawberry Bellinis (fresh juice and Champagne), Kir Royale (Creme de Cassis and Champagne) and Ritz Fizz (Amaretto, Blue Curacao liqueur, lime juice and Champagne) are particular favourites.
Will North with Bar Epernay's new Lemon Meringue Pie cocktail
There's also a Cocktail of the Month which, if successful, is added to the main menu. Bar assistant Will North mixed the current offering, Lemon Meringue Pie, a delicious concoction of Limoncello, vanilla vodka, double cream and lemon juice.
The bar in the Malmaison hotel is ready to serve a Sex and the City clientele with a Cosmopolitan cocktail. The combination of vodka, Cointreau, cranberry and ice gained popularity when it featured in the TV show Sex and the City as Sarah Jessica Parker's character Carrie Bradshaw's favourite drink. Malmaison bar manager Julia Moiseenkova created a Cosmo by shaking the ingredients, adding fresh lime, straining the juice and garnishing with orange.
Another Malmaison favourite is Caipirinha, the national cocktail of Brazil. Julia mixed one using the sugar cane liqueur cachaca, brown sugar, sugar syrup, lime and lots of ice.
Tarah Hewitt, marketing manager at The Mailbox, says: "The Mailbox has a wide variety of bars and restaurants to choose from, offering everything from classic cocktails to inventive new creations. By introducing our cocktail app, we are creating a brand new interactive way for our customers to enjoy The Mailbox's offering."
