Not to be confused with the bar that packs a "rougher" crowd next-door Club Aquarium in Old Street is home to the only nightspot in the UK that boast a swimming pool as an added feature of the clubbing experience.
It is the closest club to Old Street tube station and was one of the originals in the locale before the advent of the Shoreditch/Hoxton hipsters that made the place the hub it is today. Club Aquarium opened its doors in 1995 and has impressively thrived for 14 years of constant renovation and rejuvenation to the area.
Appropriately considering its name the club offers an underwater atmosphere, accented by a wash of blue walls and pink, purple and green lighting. A tad more swanky than your average Shoreditch dive the furniture appears to be relatively new and not salvaged from the same kitsch land-fill that appears to stock the other bars and clubs in the area.
It is an expansive club with 4 bars, 2 dance floors an outside smoking garden and of course the main attraction an L-shaped swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Of course the merits of drinking and swimming are not heavily lauded and perhaps this is why Club Aquarium is the only nightclub in the country that features a pool. However, if you do appear to be drowning, lifeguard/bouncers will be on hand to drag you out of the pool and most likely off the premises.
As you can imagine of a club that allows you to strip off the atmosphere is charged by an overwhelming sense of randyness. This of course is not a bad thing depending on what you're looking for from a night out. Friday nights are Eastern European Night and the music is Electro and Funky House. Saturday evening play host to the Adonis cabaret from 7pm – 11pm, which is a hen parties dream, while Carwash kicks off at 10pm and runs until the social hour of 3:30 am. Sunday plays host to the aptly named Wetyourself that runs from 10pm until 4am and every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month hosts D-late from 4:30am – 11:00 am.
The crowd is varied depending on the night and drinks aren't cheap but Club Aquarium is definitely worth a night out for a swim, or lets face it, just to watch the dirty, pretty, young things frolic in a pool.
