Recently re-opened in the Autumn of 2010 after its £9.9million refurbishment beginning in 2009 by BAM, it is the only Victorian Grade II listed music hall to have remained open for musical entertainment, and has hosted the infamous Charlie Chaplin and Houdini in its long lifespan. Today the Music Hall is used to host famous comedians from around the globe, from Peter Kay to Jason Byrne, as well as pantomimes at Christmas and the occasional musician.


Its handy city centre location, nestled between Briggate and the Headrow, means it is ideal for tourists; it is within walking distance of Leeds train station, Leeds Bus station, as well as being touching distance from bars and shops for pre and post-performance entertainment. With its own exclusive bar, the atmosphere is reminiscent of an old-fashioned theatre. Due to its grand architecture and its West End-esque grandeur, the acoustics are fantastic meaning it has also hosted musicians such as Regina Spektor.

Backing on to The White Swan pub (5 Swan Street City Centre Leeds LS1 6LG& #8206 ;, 0113 242 0187, accessible from the theatre, and kitted out with rustic layered seating, the facilities are excellent and quaint making this theatre/pub combo a gem in the heart of the bustling city centre. Staff also serve ice cream during the break making for a very welcoming ambience.

With its traditional layout, the boxes in the top tier border onto the stage which enables a greater possibility for audience participation and interaction. Having seen Jason Byrne twice at this venue, I can vouch for the fact that the interaction which occurred between the front row, boxes and Jason was the highlight of his show.
