To paraphrase Dorothy: 'There is no place like London.' I hope I can convince you of that here. Also check out my blog at damselwithadulcimer.wordpress.com and my theatre reviews at www.playstosee.com
There is no better place to be than London this summer. As the official Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations come to a close, there are still loads of other things on offer throughout the capital, including the City of London Festival in the very heart of the city. This year's Festival neatly bridges the gap between the Spitalfields Music Festival and the Olympics. Do you need any more reasons to come to London this summer?
Events will take place indoors in historic City churches, the world famous St Paul's Cathedral, and livery halls, many of which are not usually open to the public. The concerts will range from recitals, a capella performances, music performed by quartets, quintets and full orchestras and the musicians will be drawn from around the world, including students from London.

The Festival will not just confine itself to music, as there will also be ballet performances, and the Barbican Cinema will be screening films from 1962.
The entire Square Mile will be alive over the course of the Festival. Further treats will include a tour of the Charterhouse, originally the site of a Carthusian monastery,

and a peep behind the scenes at the Bank of England,

a tour of the Mansion House, the residence of the Lord Mayor of London

and a chance to view the treasures of Goldsmith's Hall.

In the hopes that we actually get some fine weather this summer – it has been known to happen – there will be more than 100 free outdoor events. These will include piano recitals and events on Hampstead Heath.
The Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations may now be over, but the City of London Festival's Golden Jubilee is still to come. Let's carry on with the celebrations.
