Didcot Railway Centre is home to the Great Western Railway's collection of steam engines, coaches and railway buildings, and it's also where you find a recreation of Brunel's broad gauge railway. I haven't visited for year, not since my children were small; I wish I had some youngsters to take out there in December so that we could have a Day out with Thomas to meet Father Christmas . These special events are happening every weekend in December when the famous blue engine will be at Didcot to escort his friends to Santa's grotto, where all the good girls and boys will get a present. And just to make sure that everything goes smoothly, the Fat Controller will be in attendance. Advance booking is essential via the website.

If you know of an adult, who is too old to sit on Santa's knee, you could treat them to a Railway Experience Day , which includes driving a train, firing a locomotive and acting as a guard. Now that's a present for a very big boy (or girl) who has outgrown his or her model train set.
