Folk singer Chris Cleverley will launch his new album at a special show at The Dark Horse in Moseley, Birmingham, on August 5, 2021.
The solo acoustic record,
Live from The Glass Isle, features stripped back versions of songs from Birmingham-based Chris' previous two studio albums,
Apparitions and
We Sat Back and Watched it Unfold. It was recorded in one day - August 1, 2020 - with just two microphones and an acoustic guitar, a stone's throw from the foot of Glastonbury Tor in Somerset.
The low-fi production is in stark contrast to the full band sound of Chris' other studio albums. He deconstructed and reassembled many of the songs for
Live from The Glass Isle to produce a fresh listening experience for an audience waiting for his next studio album of new material, due in spring 2022.
The recording date of August 1 is significant as it marks the pagan festival of Lughnasadh. At dawn that morning, Chris walked the spiral path of the Tor's labyrinthine perimeter, climbing to the summit beneath at sunrise.
He recalls: "
This old pagan rite of passage, commencing the harvest season, is so symbolic of facing a period of doubt and inconstancy with hope and conviction. It carried immense meaning for me as we waded, knee-deep, through the mind-spinning uncertainty of the pandemic. It offered the perfect clarity and headspace to make these recordings."
Pre-pandemic, Chris performed across the UK and Europe at prestigious venues and festivals. Notable performances include The Great British Folk Festival, Moseley Folk Festival, Looe Music Festival and Bristol Folk Festival. He has also toured with the 10-piece folk supergroup The Company of Players alongside renowned artists such as Sam Kelly and Kelly Oliver.
