Carlisle Castle is the most enjoyable place in Carlisle town. It is fun for the whole family.
You will start above the gate to the front of the castle. You will be able to see the whole of the town from the rooms. You can go through the rooms and see how people used to live. The rooms have two chairs and a table. If you go around to the side and go throw the gap, you can see the bed chambers.
If you upstairs, you will be looking over the room with the two chairs and table. They also have shutters so people could have meetings in the room and people would never know about it.
When you have finished in them rooms, you can go out into the courtyard. You can look at the all the Navy buildings from the outside but cannot go into these buildings because the Navy is still using these as offices. So you cannot go in that part of the castle.
When you have walked around the battlements. You can go in to the main part of the castle and see where they put the prisons and something that you wouldn't think of putting in the cells - in the Tudor time, they put wine in the cells!
Go upstairs and once you have got you breath back, you can read about the how people lived in the castle and what happened to them and their families. Take the time to read the information - it is mind bowing to know what has happened in this old stone castle.
The wooden floor is made of oak. When you walk over it, it feels like it might break but it is hundreds of years old and is very strong. There are very few people who make roofs like they did in the Tudor time. They put so much work and time to make the rich people happy back then.
Carlisle Castle is one for the history books and one for the whole family. It is mind blowing and time stopping all in one.
Just stop to see years of history unfold in front of you.
