Little Venice in Maida Vale is a wonderful spot in the centre of London, a place not often visited by tourists and one therefore that can provide a welcome moment of respite from the capital's frantic pace of life.
Go for a relaxing stroll or sit by the water's edge and enjoy a good book, you'll feel better for it whichever you choose. But above all, don't miss the Canalway Cavalcade taking place over one weekend in May, when the area really comes alive.
Organised by the Inland Waterways Association, the free Canalway Cavalcade event, which has been going since 1983, is a happy gathering of locals, visitors, barges and boats.
Besides admiring all the gathered vessels (there'll be more than a hundred bobbing up and down), have fun browsing the waterside stalls and stands, enjoy the live music entertainment and definitely do not miss the wonderfully entertaining performances by local morris dancers. Refreshments from a range of on-site stalls will keep your energy levels topped up throughout your visit.
There are things happening on all three days, though the evening procession of illuminated barges and boats takes place on Sunday only.
The Canalway Cavalcade runs from Saturday 4th May to Monday 6th May.
Saturday: 10am to 6pm Sunday: 10am to 6pm, followed by a live music show at 8pm and a procession of illuminated barges and boats at 9pm Monday: 10am to 5pm
