Oh I do like to be beside the seaside, oh I do like to be beside the sea...
Yes, a trip to the seaside is one of us Britons' favourite summer holiday destinations; it is particularly popular with families. While the kids are busy building sand castles and the teens waste their money at the fairground, parents can lay back, relax, and work on getting a perfect tan.
The only downside to a trip to the seaside is the trip itself. The one thing that always put me off going as a child was the prospect of the long drive on the motorway. How could anyone bear being stuck in heavy traffic for (what seemed like) endless hours? I was bored rigid sitting in the back seat with nothing to do (this was a time before portable DVD players). I think my parents had it worse though; they had to suffer the 'Are we there yet?' question every five minutes, kicking of the front seat, and arguments over whose fault it was for all the wrong turns.
But now there is a way to avoid all that; you can take a trip to the sea side without even leaving London. Well, almost.
Camden Beach is a pop-up seaside resort that will be free to enjoy from the 27th July - 24th August. Tucked away on the (hopefully) sunny terrace of the Roundhouse Theatre, there will be deck chairs, fish & chips, candy floss, and a hundred-and-fifty tonnes of sand. If you don't mind substituting the sea for the River Thames, then you're all sorted. There will even be a pier with fairground amusements, arcade games, ping pong, live music, and Tiki cocktail bars.
Don't forget your bucket and spade.
