3G Pitch at Burntwood Leisure Centre

Forget broadband and mobile phones - the real 3G revolution would appear to be in synthetic football pitches. And, as if to emphasise the point, Burntwood Leisure Centre at Burntwood, near Lichfield, in Staffordshire, unveiled its new and improved 3G artificial football surface on Saturday 3 December following a major refurbishment project.



The chairman of Lichfield District Council, Councillor David Salter, was at Burntwood Leisure Centre to do the honours and formally launch the outdoor synthetic pitch together with players and coaches from two local football teams, Burntwood Dragons and Phoenix FC. They then got to try out the new third generation artificial pitch surface after the old one was replaced towards the end of November.



Work on the scheme included removing the carpet and shock pad, repairing the base tarmac and surrounds, and installing the new 3G synthetic surface. The new surface is certified to FIFA 1 star standard and is filled with sand and topped with rubber crumb. The new soft plastic grass and loose rubber grains means that Burntwood's new pitch is as close as you can get to playing on real grass. And, as the springy surface absorbs impact and won't get waterlogged, it means it can be used all the year round, even during the winter months.



Councillor Salter said after officially unveiling the new pitch: "It was a pleasure to formally open this new and improved facility, and it's fantastic that we are able to offer such a high quality pitch to Burntwood footballers." To celebrate the launch of the state-of-the-art pitch, and to introduce it to even more players, Burntwood Leisure Centre is running an opening offer. For £15 an hour, players can book a third of the pitch at off peak times throughout the month of December.
