Birmingham Poet Laureate Jasmine Gardosi is to write a new anthem for Birmingham which will be performed for the first time this summer.
Commissioned by Misfits Music Foundation, the poem will form part of the BRUM ROCKS LIVE event – which is an opportunity for hundreds of amateur musicians and singers to come together for a special rock concert at Forum Birmingham in July.
Funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Jasmine will spend time with Jez Collins from the Birmingham Music Archive to explore Birmingham’s rich musical heritage.
She said: "What an honour to be creating a new song for the city that will be sung and played by the people of Birmingham themselves. Working with Jez and the Birmingham Music Archive I know I will find inspiration from the city’s musical heritage and I hope I can create something that reflects the city and its people today."
Organised by Misifts Music Foundation, The BRUM ROCKS LIVE concert on 14 July follows a series of free workshops funded through the National Lottery Community Fund People’s Project and taking place at venues across Birmingham and the Black Country this spring. The workshops are open to people of all levels of ability and experience.
Misfits Music Foundation artistic director Rob Jones said: "We are so excited and delighted that we’ve been able to commission Jasmine to write a special BRUM ROCKS song for our concert this summer. We can’t wait to hear what she creates and to be performing it later this year alongside hundreds of Brum’s singers and musicians."
Tickets for the concert go on sale soon. More information about the event, workshops and how to get involved in BRUMROCKS is available
