Borough market is a haven of food, independant merchants and retailers that give the savvy customer something different and wonderful each time. Be it, artisan chocolate, wild organic fresh produce, speciality cheeses, cured meats, vintage wine, the freshest largest variety of fish (choose wisely which day you go on though) oysters, heavenly bread, pastries and not-your-average-cakes galore.
You could easily spend a day at Borough market with the kids, as its very family friendly; there is so much to do, look at and touch, to keep everyone happy. It's free to look around and you could treat the kids to one or two delights, as you wander around the stalls and take everything in.
The large organic vegetable stall would be a fun way to keep the kids entertained as they help you choose wild oddly shaped vegetables, that they might not have seen before. Plus, its no secret that kids love touching feeling and smelling everything-especially food and I can guarantee that it will be a lot easier to get these vegetables into their tummys, later on that week, knowing that they have hand-picked whats for dinner.
It's very easy to spend a small fortune on trying a little bit of everything from each stall, which is fine, if you can afford it, but it's really indulgent simply going to a wine tasting and then trying the oysters caught that morning, or chilling out at one of their cafes and nibbling some cupcakes.
If you're a passionate foodie and you're looking for a rare piece of meat, or something extra special for an occasion, then the butchers are here to please. They have everything from exotic zebra to lean ostrich. If you can tell your Jamon Iberica de Bellota, from your Italian Prosciutto, then look no further than Borough market. They also have your more everyday fillet of beef, lamb chops and chicken, all of which come from well reared farms. I'd recommend looking at the website to choose which day to take a visit, as not all butcher stalls are open every day.
Personally, I'm a food fiend and I couldn't wait to get home to cook the fresh ingredients; wild mushrooms that I'd never knew existed before, cooked in a dish with the most tender and juicy grass fed fillet beef steak. It was perfect, and I cannot wait to take a trip to Borough market again, the only caution I advise; wear flat shoes.
