If you have never heard of Blood Brothers, where have you been for the last 20 years? The smash hit musical written by Willy Russel is now in its 20th year on the West End.
Set in a poor part of Liverpool in the 1960s the musical tells the sad tale of Mrs Johnstone. When she discovers she is pregnant with twins, Mrs Johnstone is forced to give up one of them to her rich employee as she cannot afford to keep them both. The story pans over 20 years and explores the complex relationship of the two brothers, who meet and become friends. But are continually separated by their mothers, and the separate societies in which the grow up. Their strained and unusual friendship is painful and ultimately ends in tragedy.
Poignant and incredibly sad, the story is powered by the amazing musical score and incredible acting. Mrs Johnstone's famous ballad 'Tell Me it's not True', is heartbreaking and real, making this an epic and emotional piece of theatre. The character of Mrs Johnstone has been made famous by many musical stars, most recently Melanie Chisholm (of Spice Girl fame), who was nominated for an Olivier for her performance.
The role is currently being portrayed by Natasha Hamilton.
