Wondering where to have a pre-theatre dinner in Kilburn before you go to one of the Tricycle Theatre's excellent productions? Then look no further than across Kilburn High Road, to the Black Lion pub, right opposite the Tricycle, which offers great, reasonably-priced food in its bar and restaurant.
The bar menu includes a tapas selection from which you can choose four items for £13.95. We shared chorizo with new potatoes, baba ganoush (eggplant) with homemade flat bread, calamari and lamb skewers. The food was delicious and nicely presented on wooden boards. We also treated ourselves to desserts of raspberry crème brulee and cheesecake, which were equally scrumptious. Mains, which include typical pub grub, such as burgers, Cumberland sausage and fish and chips, cost around £9.00. [BREAK]
If you want something a bit more a la carte, try the Black Lion's restaurant, which has a more extensive menu, including starters, such as artichoke and goat's cheese tart and chicken liver and brandy parfait. Mains include veggie wellington, lamb shank, and Barbary duck breast, ranging in price from £8.50 to £13.50. There are also more desserts to choose from in the restaurant.Interestingly, the Black Lion offers only Guinness and Peroni on tap, but it does have a very wide range of bottled beers and ciders, as well as wine and cocktails. The latter, which include Lavendar and Ear Grey Iced Tea, Pink Fizz and Late Night in Kilburn, are offered two for one all day Wednesday and from 4pm to 7pm Monday to Friday.[BREAK]
Claimed to have been one of the haunts of the infamous highwayman, Dick Turpin, this historic Victorian public house has a Grade II listed interior with ornate ceilings, chandeliers and giant windows. Huge, faded Chesterfield-style sofas line the spacious interior with its aged, wooden bar and bevelled glass and wood panelling.

The Black Lion is also a guesthouse with reasonably-priced rooms (£69.50 for a double per night)which have been recently refurbished. Guests can have a two-course meal in the restaurant for £13.95.

The Black Lion is a couple of minutes' walk from Kilburn underground station.
